Firstly, it is important to define what coaching is and what it is not.
Coaching is anchored in the belief that the individual who is to participate in a coaching process, the ‘coachee’ if you will, possesses innate strengths and is in the best position to work out the best way forward for them to achieve their goals but who needs help guidance and support to move forward.
The coach does not define the goals nor tells the client what to do. They do not instruct nor teach, train, mentor, or counsel. Rather they question, challenge, encourage, guide, facilitate, and support the client throughout the self-actualising process.
In an organisational setting, the focus of the coaching effort is directed toward supporting/facilitating an individual, team, or organisational unit with the specific aim of achieving improved business performance and outcomes. In the organisational context, the coach is typically engaged by the organisation.
